The Wrights, In the Summertime, 2008 (Self-released, Indie) (4 of 5 stars)

The Wrights deliver near perfect Americana and Roots music with their latest self-produced full-length In the Summertime. This record evokes the relaxed vibe of a hot summer Sunday afternoon in the South, where folks look out over a lanscape filled with blooming Crape Myrtles and large Magnolias, maybe a creek or river somewhere nearby, sipping sweet iced tea. In the Summertime was not intended to be a hit record, but something more like a gift for fans. The ten songs are all covers, carefully chosen to reflect the aforementioned steamy Southern afternoon vibe. As such, this record was self-produced and recorded live in the basement of The Wrights' Nashville home.

For fans of The Wrights, In the Summertime is a real treat. The record features Adam's elegant flat-picking abilities nestled in soft vintage tremolo as well as the gorgeous harmonies of Adam and Shannon fans have come to expect. Rotating the lead vocal, when Adam and Shannon sing together it is magical. The intimate nature of this recording, however, offers the audience an undiluted, perhaps microscopic, snapshot of both Adam and Shannon's individual vocal abilities. That said, this writer is convinced that Adam Wright is emerging as an outstanding lead vocalist who, combined with his exceptional lead-guitar playing, could easily launch a solo career of his own and follow in the footsteps of Vince Gill and Brad Paisley. Shannon's lead vocals, however, lack uniqueness on this recent offering.

In the Summertime is a must have for fans of Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, and southern charm. — Vincent Wynne, July 22, 2008
