Novelift, Up in Clouds, 2008 (Self-released, Indie)
After a few years of playing shows locally in Nashville and surrounding cities, Novelift has just released their first full length record titled Up in Clouds. Many of the songs are recognizable from recent live performances, but they have, as with their first EP letmeinthisismypass, once again demonstrated their ability to produce high quality studio versions of their songs.
With a voice on par with Jeff Buckley and Jimmy Gnecco, Colin Ambrose stands out on this record as well as in Novelift’s live performances (although Steven Boone deserves due credit for his many contributions). Unlike the EP which was slightly more “poppy,” for lack of a better term, Up in Clouds offers something much different with a mixture of blues, electronic, and ambient background sounds. One of the standout cuts on the album is “The Scaar,” which has earned a slot in the set list for most of their recent shows. This song offers a prime example of Novelift’s ability to mix heavy guitars with electronic beats, and Colin’s voice only makes things better.
It is clear that Novelift’s music is evolving in much the same way Radiohead’s music has evolved. We can only wait anxiously to see where these guys will end up and the outstanding music that they will undoubtedly continue to produce.
