Artist Spotlight McClain: Turning Heads in Nashville
The folk rock duo McClain recently sat down with Listen!Nashville to discuss their debut self-released EP entitled The Ivy EP and to share some of the history involved in the creation of McClain. Having moved to Nashville less than one year ago, the songwriting and vocal talent of (husband and wife) Travis and Lindsay McClain are capturing the attention of some of Nashville's best producers and musicians. At only 25 years of age, they've both already done plenty of soul-searching and their songs reflect as much, touching on sociological, existential, and psychological themes more consistent with the material of Johnny Cash in his later years. Like Johnny and June, the union of McClain reads something like a Hollywood love story and, appropriately, begins in Los Angeles, CA.
Originally from Prescott, AZ, Travis dropped out of college and moved to Los Angeles in 2003 to pursue "the arts." Although quickly finding himself in a band, he fell into the acting/modeling/television side of things. After achieving some moderate success and gaining an insider's view of the whole acting scene in Los Angeles, Travis realized that the "vibe" of that lifestyle wasn't for him. In 2004 when he first met Lindsay, he was already transitioning away from this initial career choice.
Unlike Travis, Lindsay was raised in Southern California, and was essentially a typical well-adjusted California girl. Well, maybe not so typical. Self-described as a creative person who happens to be "weirdly good" at math, Lindsay has always enjoyed dancing and was seriously considering a career as a professional dancer. But Lindsay's brief experience in the professional dancing industry did not sit well with her. It was at this critical point in both of their lives, as Travis was transitioning away from acting and modeling, and as Lindsay confirmed that she would not be dancing professionally, that the two met.
Introduced to each other through a mutual friend, their relationship developed and became more serious as Lindsay was finishing her undergraduate degree in Math at Pepperdine University. During this time, Travis returned to collegeattending Kings College in the Sherman Oaks part of Los Angeleswhere he earned a degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Biblical counseling. Lindsay continued on to complete a Master's degree in Math as Travis finished up his college degree.
