Majestico, Boundary Conditions, 2008 (Self-released, Indie)
From the mind of Nashville singer/songwriter Graham Fitzpenn, under the alias Majestico, comes Boundary Conditions--a quirky surfer-folk record that is a lovely cross between Pet Sounds-era Brian Wilson and M. Ward à la Transistor Radio. Fitzpenn has been performing for several years on the Nashville club circuit, most notably with his previous band ROYGBIV, as well as with other small projects. The majority of Boundary Conditions was written and recorded by Fitzpenn.
The album opens with “I Like You,” which begins with a rhythmic acoustic guitar that sounds like something from Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors LP, but quickly takes on Majestico’s signature surfer-folk style, as melodically drifting guitar-riffs chime in alongside Fitzpenn’s lo-fi, reverb-heavy, Sun Records vocal tone. The record’s surfer-folk vibe is enhanced by the addition of female background singers that punctuate the retro vibe. The lyrics sound like they could have been written by Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips, but Fitzpenn’s voice lends itself more to the style of Velvet Underground (think “Stephanie Says”), and M. Ward (think “Paul’s Song”). Although comparisons can certainly be made, Boundary Conditions brings with it a fresh style that isn’t quite like anything else out there. The record assimilates a variety of musical ingredients that ends in a final product that is incredibly inventive, interesting, and unique. Though the album is not a full-length release, the songs are infectious—don’t be surprised if you find yourself listening to this one over and over again.
Boundary Conditions is now available on itunes although you might have to do a little digging to find it. No news yet as to when Majestico will be playing in the Nashville area, but keep an eye out because these will be shows worth seeing.
