February 2nd, 2007 @ 3rd & LindsleyGARRISON STARR
Garrison Starr is a Nashville based artist currently promoting her newest indie release Fans' Greatest Hits, Volume One. Tonight's show at 3rd & Lindsley was a rare full-band performance with Starr's good friend and producer Neilson Hubbard on bass, keys, and backing vocals, while Kirk Yoquelet (aka, Jesus) provided the drumming. Starr, as always, aptly handled the electric and acoustic guitars while delivering powerfully beautiful vocals that are on par with Patty Griffin's work on Flaming Red. Although Starr's vocals are reminiscent of Patty Griffin, Starr exudes an energy comparable to female rockers such as Pat Benatar and Joan Jett indeed, Garrison Starr is a tour de force.
In recent performances, Starr has performed solo with only her electric guitar providing a sort of low-volume muddy telecaster alt-country-ish foundation from which her angelically angry vocals soar. Starr's vocals are always pushed out in front of the mix, and rightfully so, as she has a vocal power and control that is as solid as those of former New Grass Revival frontman John Cowan. Tonight, Starr's vocals were again the focus. Although performing with a complete rhythm section, the songs (unfortunately) were bereft of instrumental work or solos Starr's vocals carried every song. Much like the band Live, whose songs are carried by strong lead vocals, Starr's songs lean too heavily on her vocals. Although she can certainly handle this emphasis, some solid instrumental workperhaps adding a lead guitarist who can match Starr's precision vocalswill add the nuance and texture that her songs currently lack.
