Saturday, December 30th, 2006, THE BASEMENT—GLOSSARY

Glossary is a southern rock band from Murfreesboro, TN, a city (former capital of Tennessee) located approximately 30 miles Southeast of Nashville and the home of Middle Tennessee State University. MTSU has one of the top Music Business and Production programs in the country, and we are seeing a steady rise of talented artists emerging from Murfreesboro. Glossary is currently receiving high praise for their recent (2006) indie release, For What I Don't Become, a self-reflective alt-country masterpiece whose writing is on par with the songs on Lucinda Williams's grammy winning Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. Had the production on For What I Don't Become been as brilliant as Steve Earle's for Williams, a 2006 grammy nomination would have been well-deserved.

Glossary is a 5-piece, with lead vocalist Joey Kneiser also playing a driving telecaster for rhythm guitar—his energy is reminiscent of early Bruce Springsteen. Female backup singer Kelly Kneiser (yes, I think they are married) positions herself up front alongside Joey. Unfortunately, this set-up is awkward, as Kelly rarely sings—and when Kelly does sing, it is only typical backing parts, never lead. So it feels awkward to watch Kelly standing there under the spotlight with nothing to do but listen to her bandmates rock. This set-up places Joey as a kind of sideman/co-frontperson who always takes the lead. Visually speaking, Glossary would benefit by situating Kelly somewhere behind Joey in order to allow Joey the spotlight as the central focal point of the band, which he is anyway.
