New Year's Eve, December 31st, 2006, EXIT IN—DISAPPOINTED BY CANDY, AARON WINTERS, THE GABE DIXON BAND, and JEREMY LISTER.

Welcome to 2007 everyone! I am sad to report that New Year's Eve at the EXIT IN was perhaps the most anti-climactic New Year's Eve party I have ever attended. The room was sparsely filled, and the energy from the crowd was, well—apprehension. It was as if people were asking themselves: Should I party like it's 1999 and risk getting tossed by that bouncer (who was giving everyone the evil-eye and finally did toss a friendly young couple who were apparently breaking the "no-sitting" rule), or should I just chill and listen to the music? Nobody really seemed to be able to answer that question, and so the night went by with most just standing around, and the EXIT IN looked more like a high-school prom than a New Year's Eve party. To top it off, the audience slow-danced, yes, slow-danced to a couple numbers throughout the night. Whatever.

Perhaps the evening's biggest surprise was the first band, DISAPPOINTED BY CANDY. A two-piece band with a full sound, the singer/guitarist Gabe Ruschival delivered original numbers filled with Duran Duran and Depeche Mode influenced vocals atop dance-party techno beats. At times this singer channeled a younger crooning Elvis Costello, while simultaneously backing himself on guitar—churning out early U2 sounding guitar riffs. Good stuff. Put these guys on your list of must-see bands for 2007.
