Edie Brings a Refreshing "World Music" Vibe to Nashville

Tuesday night at the Family Wash on Nashville's East side, the audience was treated to a short set from the artist and musician known as Edie, who is currently based in Music City. Edie was born and raised in Holland, left home sometime around the age of eighteen, and after some extensive world traveling, landed in Los Angeles where she began her career in music. After finding her voice in LA, Edie relocated to Amsterdam, and now, thankfully, she resides in Nashville.

To get a sense of Edie's music, it's important to know that she is not originally from the United States. Her sound is very consistent with a certain vibe that has come to be categorized as "world-music." Indeed, some of her songs are written in French, some in English, and Edie's vocals are a pleasing blend of Sarah McLachlan and Sinead O'Connor. Although Edie is not (yet) a household name in the Nashville area, she is a mature songwriter, and her songs are on par with anything currently featured on Putumayo World Music. To be sure, NPR recently featured Edie's music on its "Open Mic" program, and she will be heading back to Holland in the coming months to record her third CD for the Holland-based label AGmusic.

Edie's first two CD's are fully produced and lean heavily toward a techno avant-garde alternative/new wave sound, reminiscent of Kate Bush, Blondie, and Enigma. However, Edie's live shows in Nashville have been very organic, as she performs only with an acoustic guitar and sparse percussion and piano accompaniment. Everyone in Nashville knows that the true test of any song is how it sounds with very little production. It seems that Edie has taken on this challenge and succeeded perhaps beyond her own expectations, as she reports that her forthcoming record will, indeed, be more acoustic-based—less new wave than her previous two records. Edie's next Nashville show is at Edgehill Studios on September 5th. Fans of Sinead, Sarah McLachlan, Holden, and Deborah Harry will find much to love in Edie. Get on the bandwagon now, while there's still room. —Vincent Wynne
